Why do so many good dancers choose to dance "on 2"?
Watch carefully on the dance floor: some couples move with more fluidity, more sensuality, even when the music gets faster. Their timing seems more measured, more musical, and you'll sometimes hear accents on the 4th and 8th beats—a nod to the bass lines, the tumbao, and the clave.
This "on 2" style is directly rooted in the roots of salsa. The son cubano—the direct ancestor of salsa—was already danced this way, with the montuno step. And the chachacha, which has made a strong comeback in recent years, is also naturally danced 'on 2'.
In 2001, we introduced the "típico" style and the New York style to Brussels. Since then, hundreds of dancers have discovered this pleasure—and some have even become teachers themselves (you may know them… without knowing where they got their passion from 😉).
But is it difficult to go "on 2"?
A little, at first. Like anything worthwhile. But it's often easier and more enjoyable than your first steps "on 1." And if you choose the right level (we'll guide you), practice with pleasure (our specialty), and your teacher is competent (that helps), you'll quickly get a taste for it. Dancing "on 2" isn't just about "shifting everything by a beat": it's about learning to listen, feel, and play with the musical richness of salsa. It's a new door that opens to greater finesse and greater pleasure. And rest assured: you can always dance "on 1" with anyone, whenever the opportunity arises. But be careful: the risk is that you might end up getting a taste for it for good... like we did in 1997 😄
