Levels

We appreciate…

that you trust us to learn salsa and bachata. And we also want, by teaching with pleasure and relaxation, to allow you intelligent progression through the levels we offer.

That is why moving up to a higher level at the start of a new session is not automatic.

A recurring concern for us, teachers and assistants, is facing the presence in a class of one or more students « who can’t keep up », because they have not yet acquired the skills needed to follow the pace of the class, but who « want to move up »…

Everyone’s progress and enjoyment suffer, the level of the class drops, frustration increases — a vicious circle — and the people concerned are often the most stressed and those who enjoy themselves the least.

The mind moves fast, the body moves slowly…

Understanding the content of a programme intellectually is an essential first step, but it is only a tiny part of the journey, which consists of integrating that programme at body level (hearing, sight, touch — music, style, contact and dynamics).

Everyone needs a different amount of time to get there. Some are fast (not so common), and others (the majority) slower.

You can therefore move up to the next level — and stay there — when you master the programme of the previous level, with the teachers’ approval.

« I’m surely not going to repeat this level, I’ll be bored… »

Repeating a level you have already taken has many advantages, including…

  • you finally hear advice and recommendations you had not heard before, perhaps a little overwhelmed the first time by the various difficulties to tackle at once
  • you will be among the best in the class, and also more relaxed, since you already have an idea of the programme
  • you will gradually gain greater confidence, very useful for enjoying dancing in real situations (salsa & bachata are improvisational dances where it is important to relax and « let it come »)
  • in short, you will improve!

Our students often take several classes per week and also attend levels below their own — again, an excellent way to appreciate how far you have come and to consolidate your technique.

Let’s be frank…

If you are regularly bored despite…

  • the repeated pleasure of moving to music (exciting) and mastering the basics that will make your learning and future progress fast and secure
  • the friendly presence of other students (nice) and their desire to work with you
  • the energy the teacher and assistant put into helping you progress (unusual), and their skills (undeniable)

… and if, at each class, by repeating and refining your ability to dance effortlessly, you don’t feel in the right place, is it worth continuing?

All the dancers who inspire you have been dancing for a long time and have gradually improved and corrected their practice. But not everyone is made for it: are you? You can enjoy salsa without becoming a salsero…

Our « advanced » class?

All students in this class took time to join it, either on our invitation, or by applying — sometimes repeatedly before being admitted 🙂

What is certain is that with time, pleasure and practice, everyone gets there, sooner or later. Everything can be worked on and resolved, and private lessons can help you too. Identify your difficulties, and talk about them!

A few « tips » for learning quickly and well:

  • Master basic steps that « work and breathe », fluid, relaxed, toned
  • Actively listen to salsa & bachata songs you enjoy, identifying their timing (count!)
  • Work on « balanced » contact with different partners (leading and following)
  • Tackle understanding difficulties: identify the structure of steps and turns, be precise
  • Practise as often as possible, in class and outside, with classmates, or « solo »
  • Build solid technique: one difficulty at a time, don’t skip steps!
  • Without a doubt the most important in the long run: have fun, by repeating in a thousand ways what you have already integrated! Motivate yourself, make frequent, easy practice an enjoyable and relaxing moment, and you will be surprised by your progress!
